When ageing control systems began threatening round-the-clock production at Humlum A/S, the company chose a controlled, zero-downtime migration to a modern, open automation platform — securing both operational stability and a clear path to growth.

Stability as a competitive advantage

At Humlum A/S in Hjerm, everything revolves around quality, efficiency, and reliable delivery. The company manufactures puff pastry, chilled doughs, and tartlets for retail, catering, and industrial customers — and that demands production lines that run stably around the clock.

After many years of operation, however, the legacy control system had begun to show its age. Components had been discontinued, the code was locked, and unintended errors during production caused unexpected stoppages. At the same time, support costs were rising and the risk of a serious breakdown was growing.

This marked the beginning of a major modernisation — with the goal of giving Humlum full control over its own automation, increasing uptime, and establishing a technological foundation for future growth.

A Controlled Upgrade with No Production Loss

The project began with a thorough mapping of equipment, processes, and risk points. Based on this analysis, a migration plan was developed that allowed switchovers to be carried out within short, pre-scheduled windows — so production could continue without interruption.

The transition itself was executed in several stages and rigorously tested before the new platform was brought into operation. Operators and maintenance staff were trained on the new system so they could quickly take advantage of the new capabilities.

A Modern, Open Platform

The new solution was built on Siemens’ TIA Portal with an open, fully documented architecture. This means Humlum can now troubleshoot, optimise, and expand production without relying on external vendors or proprietary systems.

The system is equipped with:

  • PLCs from the Siemens S7 family
  • Intuitive WinCC Unified operator interfaces
  • SINAMICS drives and SIWAREX weighing modules

The combined setup delivers better visibility, faster response times, and a markedly higher level of operational reliability.

Measurable Improvements

Shortly after go-live, Humlum noticed a clear difference in day-to-day operations. Faults that previously required lengthy stoppages and external support can now be identified and resolved quickly. Operators experience a more stable production environment and a system that responds precisely and predictably.

The Collaboration

The upgrade was carried out in a close and trusting partnership between Humlum’s internal operations team and the automation specialists at Au2mate.

From the very start of the project, Au2mate prioritised a thorough pre-analysis and a structured migration plan that accounted for Humlum’s specific production conditions and the narrow windows in which the plant could stand still. Together, a clear strategy was developed for switchover, testing, and commissioning — with minimum risk and maximum operational reliability as the primary objectives.

Au2mate was responsible for technical implementation, documentation, test procedures (FAT/SAT), and training of Humlum’s operators and maintenance personnel. Emphasis was placed on transparency in design and knowledge transfer, so that Humlum can continue to work independently with the system and fully exploit the potential of the new platform.

The project was delivered on time and without any unplanned production stoppages. Throughout, the collaboration was characterised by open dialogue, flexibility, and a shared commitment to delivering a reliable and future-proof solution.
